Winter is here and temperatures have
cooled off, and if you’re planning a trip to Las Vegas you might think that
it’s not a good time to go to see the Grand Canyon using Las Vegas as a
starting point. Nothing is further from
the truth, and we had even heard that some people are under the impression that
the Grand Canyon isn’t even open in the wintertime. This is not true, and while the north rim is
closed during the winter, the main areas that are the national park places that
you have seen in books and magazines are all open and fully functional year
round. While there may be some portions
and viewpoints that are closed due to snow or ice, this is actually rare and
you will find that the majority of time the entire area is open and fully
functional. There are actually benefits
to go in to the Grand Canyon in winter that many will say are so worth it that
they actually called the period in between October and springtime the secret
season.
So why is the Grand Canyon better to
visit in winter than in the summer? This
mainly has to do with the fact that tourism falls to a level of about 10%
during the winter than it would be during the other times of the year. This dramatic reduction in tourism makes it
so that the park is actually more enjoyable for many people because they are
not fighting to take those pictures that they were looking for or hike on those
trails that they wanted to. The
unfortunate aspect of the popular tourist attraction is that a lot of people
are going to be doing the same things that you are doing, so if you are
interested in some specific aspects of the area you might find winter to be a
far more pleasurable time of year than summer.
While the weather is going to be more crisp it is easily overcome by
wearing layers that can be put on or taken off depending on the unpredictable
weather of the day. The Grand Canyon can
go anywhere between 70° and 30°during the winter season, and you must prepare
for anything because you can never tell in advance what you are going to get. If it snows, you might have a few of the road
shutdown but you will get a completely different look to the canyon you ever
expected or have seen before. In
addition, the winter skies are far clearer than in any other time of year,
giving you a more perfect view and follow-up are too many than any other
time. Let’s face it, you are going to
the Grand Canyon for the view and if there are certain times of year that might
be a little bit colder but allow you to see even farther into the distance,
isn’t that worth it? If you would like
